Hold the Fud Please

Compiled by John P. Weiksnar  @jpw1116   9/28/2020

During National Drive Electric Week 2020, I decided on a whim to spar with the Luddites trolling the event’s Facebook feed—authentically, to offer them some counterpoint and cite sources—plus see if anyone could convince me that going electric, years back, wasn’t the right choice. That convincing never took place.

It was easy pickings. Nearly every comment on the “Normal Now” post I chose began with a derogatory, uninformed, or just plain nebulous remark, ready to refute. Out of dozens and dozens of smackdowns (the FUDsters uniformly got caught citing zero sources at all), we scored all of two conversions: honest folk, just immune to the strides made since the days of lead and cadmium in batteries.

Then something profound happened.

I made a quick taxonomy of the sixteen categories the FUD flocculated into and was awed seeing the skew that emerged. The numero uno category, BIAS / DELUSION, is a sad sign that the American polemic against EVs outpaces the usual “How much, how far, how long” trinity of newbie questions. By a longshot.

Also, wait until you see the iron(y)-brimmed concern that EV holdouts foist when environmental impact and recycling suddenly seem to support their fossil agenda. Talk about a screwy (even mildly entertaining) flipside to their own base spew.

And now, enjoy the FUD-o-rama.

This study is unscientific and apolitical. The grammar-corrected FUD examples ahead, massaged out of 135 comments spanning all sixteen categories, hint at an eventual toolbox of refined comebacks for any EV FUD. All of the responses are off-the-cuff, from my POV as a seasoned EV owner, and are open to feedback. The links are also fair game for tuning and updating.

Special thanks go out to the tiny but sympathetic group of EV compadres who contributed to many of the same posts, especially Cindy Mendenhall Rosenberg, Chucky Showmaker and Jim O’Kane.

CATEGORY #1:  BIAS / DELUSION

FUD:Electric cars are owned by fools.

RESPONSE:How many have you owned—I MEAN, driven? You have driven them, right?

FUD:Good sheeple.

RESPONSE:You’re right, there’s a lot of good folks who still pay for gasoline, wasting 80+ cents on every dollar just to heat up their radiator fluid. EVs are the opposite, and their ~10% waste heat goes to heat the battery or cabin. Thanks for reminding me about that!

FUD:Go live in your liberal blind world and stay away from me. I am a gun toting veteran that can’t stand any liberal thinking.

RESPONSE:Non-Liberals drive EVs too.

FUD:I’m staying with internal combustion. Because I want to be a lot more environmentally friendly. And I want to be sure and have reserved fuel for when the Democrats shut down the power grid during a manufactured crisis!

RESPONSE:Your logic is so faulty, even if you were right, you would be wrong.
