A recent update to the Tesla Model 3 and new Model Y owner’s manual shows that Tesla is planning to very imminently release an update to the Autopilot systems. The update would include features that have been in the works for a very long time. Most importantly, will be the new functionality of Autopilot while driving on city streets, and not on the highway where Autopilot was most comfortable. The update allows the car to recognize and react to traffic lights. The car will also make the decision as to whether or not to continue through a yellow light or to stop. There was also a video posted to twitter which shows the new feature in action. As of now, the feature has been given to some early access members and will be released to the entire fleet soon. More about how that works, as well as the other functionality included in the update is available in this image of the updated owner’s manual.
Although the Model Y shares 75% of its parts with the Model 3, there are still some essential differences between the two. One of the most notable being some of the changes Tesla made to the powertrain in the Model Y. The Model 3 has been shown to put down 570 brake horsepower, and the Model Y recently has been tested to show that it can put down up to 623 brake horsepower from all four wheels. Although the two vehicles were expected to have the same powertrain and motors, it was later revealed that the Model Y has a heat pump to help maintain range in cold environments, and it is now clear that there were more tweaks. The tweaks that were made are likely to counteract the weight that comes with an SUV like the Model Y.
