For owners of older Tesla models with the MCU1, upgrading to the new MCU and getting all of the new features seems like a no-brainer. There is one drawback, the MCU upgrade also removes the radio features from cars that are upgraded. Starting in the fourth quarter of this year, Tesla will begin offering the FM radio retrofit for $500 by appointment at their Service Centers. Although the price seems high, Tesla figures that not all customers will want the FM radio retrofit, so in order to keep the price down on the MCU upgrade, they do not include the radio retrofit.
Tesla is currently beginning a massive effort to increase the number of Service Centers in order to catch up with all of their new sales. Now that Tesla has over one million cars on the road, it has become clear that Service Center growth has not been consistent with sales growth, thus overwhelming many Service Centers with more cars than they can service at a reasonable rate. Tesla reportedly is seeking to add 51 new Service Centers through the end of 2021. Along with Service Centers, Superchargers will also be getting a significant amount of new locations.
